How ERC Recycles Desktop Computers
Desktop computers contain some of the most valuable and reclaimable metals in all of electronics, including steel, aluminum, power/breakage boards, hard drives, copper, processors, and RAM to name just a few. At the ERC, a team of volunteers disassembles all desktop computers. We then remove the hard drives and place them into a secure locked area under surveillance. Additionally, we wipe the hard drives that can be re-used of all data according to DoD (Dept of Defense) standards. We will also destroy any hard drives donated at the request of the donor.
The ERC receives many desktop computers that are still functional. We then test, wipe all data, and when possible, refurbish and resell these computers. This re-purposing helps give new life to gently used computers.
